When you go to the dentist, there are many ways to unwind. Some people actually use their minds to divert themselves from what’s going on in their mouth by listening to music, looking at peaceful scenery, or watching the latest movie. More recently, a cosmetic dentist’s efforts, which could require more intensive work, may provide a wider variety of calming strategies. These services can be referred to as sedation dentistry.Learn more about us at Dastrup Dental: Joseph Dastrup, DDS
Locate a Happy Place
This approach can seem trite, but often relaxing the mind, listening to calming music, or listening to nature sounds may help alleviate some of the anxiety that many people feel while visiting their cosmetic dentist. The expectation of pain, rather than the actual pain, is mostly what causes the high degree of anxiety that many people feel.
Take This Pill
The night before a procedure, your dentist can prescribe an oral sedative such as Diazepam. Such medications can be made available even hours before an appointment. These sedatives will ease you but will not relieve pain. In addition to the sedative, your dentist can use a local anaesthetic, such as Novocain.
IV Infusion Therapy
Some cosmetic dentists may provide anti-anxiety treatment by intravenous (IV) sedation. However, if needles are a source of anxiety for you, this method of relaxation may not be for you. Again, there is no pain relief with this form, so a local anaesthetic would be needed.
Nitrous oxide gas, also known as laughing gas, is perhaps the most well-known – and often mocked – form of sedation. The patient breathes in the gas while staying conscious, allowing the dentist to administer local anaesthetic to alleviate any discomfort you may feel during the operation.
