First, the bulk of your hair, about 80 percent to 90 percent, is in the anagen process at any given time. This cycle lasts three to seven years and is characterised by continuous growth.
The root is encased in the follicle, which helps the root expand by transferring nutrients to it. Hair lengthens by about.5 inch per month on average, but this varies depending on a variety of factors such as hormones, age, stress levels, and so on. During this time, the bulb is still developing pigment, which leaves the hair looking healthy and full.
After the anagen process, the hair enters catagen, which is a 2-4 week transitional stage.
The root separates from the follicle at this stage, and the follicle shrinks as a result. Your hair no longer absorbs colour or nutrients, and the root continues to move closer to the skin’s surface.
Finally, the hair goes into telogen, or sleeping mode. This lasts for three months, and at any given time, about 10-15% of your hair is in telogen. Your hair is now fully separated from the follicle, and it can be shed or come out on its own as you clean your scalp. A fresh keratin fibre starts to emerge under the old one in the follicle, repeating the hair growth cycle.
