Plantation shutter components

Traditional plantation shutters are built in a straightforward manner. Plantation shutters are usually composed of a series of full-length vertical panels and are divided into four major components:

The ‘rails’ are the horizontal slats that run across the top and bottom of the shutter. Some plantation shutters may also have one or more horizontal rails running through the middle of the shutter, separating it into different levels.

Vertical’stiles’ run along the sides of the shutter.

‘Louvers’ are the parallel slats that run between the stiles and can be angled and adjusted to let in more or less light. Louvers can be made in a variety of sizes and shapes.

The mechanism that regulates the movement of the louvres is known as the ’tilt rod.’ These are also available in a number of models.

Single tilt rods consist of a single continuous vertical rod that connects and controls all of the louvres at the same time.

A split tilt rod is just that: a tilt rod that has been split into separate parts. This enables independent control of multiple tiers found on a single shutter screen, such as changing the top tier to allow in more light while holding the louvres on a lower tier closed for privacy.

Hidden tilt rods allow the apparatus to be hidden behind the shutter panel invisibly.

Where did plantation shutters originate?

Shutters have been around for hundreds of years. According to some scholars, they were used as far back as ancient Greece, with slats constructed from marble slabs. They were used before glass to shield against the elements such as rain, wind, and direct heat from the sun’s rays. They also effectively kept insects and small animals out of the house. When these elements and pests left, the shutters’ true purpose was realised, and the shutters could be opened, allowing for fresh sunlight and a cool breeze to ventilate the establishment.
